The Sydney Muslim Writers Festival is a unique platform that celebrates the diverse voices of Muslim writers, poets, and thinkers. Founded with the vision of showcasing authentic storytelling, SMWF offers a space for both emerging and established authors to share their narratives and explore various themes in literature.
Our theme this year 'Beyond Noise' is about filtering out the excess of opinions in modern discourse to amplify voices that are constructive, authentic, and rooted in knowledge.

Our Vision

To cultivate and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of literature written by Muslims across diverse genres, for local and international audiences

What Our Community Says

Hear from the writers, readers, and attendees who’ve been part of the SMWF journey.
What attracted me to the festival was the children's library, [there are] muslim books from all around the world and to have a look at the range of books that are here
Nadia Serhan Faour,
Author and Attendee
What I loved most about the Sydney Muslim Writers Festival was the clear effort to hear voices from many communities. It didn’t feel limited to one cultural lens. It felt inclusive, intentional, and true to the diversity of Muslim stories.
George Green
Motivational speaker and children's author
I found great comfort in a space where joy and solace could naturally coexist. It was also a safe haven for expressing our collective grief and rage over the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and for addressing the silencing of Palestinian solidarity that many of us are experiencing. Such spaces are crucial right now.
Annie McCann
Indonesian-Australian emcee and author
The Sydney Muslim Writers' Festival (SMWF) is a distinguished program that enriches Australia's multicultural landscape. By providing a professional platform for Muslim authors, writers, and filmmakers, SMWF encourages engagement with Australian literature while nurturing creative excellence.
Mostofa Alam
Founder, Date Palm Tree Publishing House
It's such an accomplishment to have people from our community publishing books from their various fields of expertise...It's a big honour to the muslim community and the Australian community at large
Aisha Meguid
Author and Attendee
I loved it! I wish you guys could do this every year instead of bi-yearly...InshaAllah that would come soon
Anastasia Pavlovic
Attendee
An opportunity to connect and learn from other writers and authors in the muslim community, and to connect with other people that are passionate about literature
Lamisse Hamouda
Author and Attendee
What I loved most about the Sydney Muslim Writers Festival was the clear effort to hear voices from many communities. It didn’t feel limited to one cultural lens. It felt inclusive, intentional, and true to the diversity of Muslim stories.
George Green
Motivational speaker and children's author
I took much joy and solace being in a space that allows those two things to co-exist in such natural, open and heartfelt ways. Suffice to say, it was also a precious and safe space for articulating the collective grief, rage and sorrow over the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and for speaking to the silencing of Palestinian solidarity and advocacy that so many of us are experiencing and witnessing at this time. Such spaces are so important in this critical moment.
Annie McCann
Indonesian-Australian emcee and author
The Sydney Muslim Writers’ Festival (SMWF) is an important and distinguished program within the Australian Muslim community and a valued contributor to the richness of Australia’s multicultural landscape. By providing a credible, professional platform for Muslim authors, writers and filmmakers, SMWF has created an effective model that encourages and strengthens engagement with Australian literature, while nurturing genuine creative excellence.
Mostofa Alam

As an author, having this platform with our community is absolutely incredible and even more amazing connecting with other fellow authors.
SMWF ‘24 attendee
The festival was incredibly inspiring and empowering and I could not be prouder to have been involved.
