MIAA Announces Cultural Partnership with the Museum of Islamic Art, Qatar

MIAA partners with the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar for collection loans, staff exchange programmes, and joint educational initiatives.

The Museum of Islamic Art Australia is thrilled to announce a landmark cultural partnership with the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in Doha, Qatar—one of the world's most prestigious institutions dedicated to Islamic art and heritage.

This collaboration marks a significant moment for MIAA and for the Australian arts community. Through this partnership, both institutions will work together to share collections, exchange expertise, and develop joint programmes that bring the richness of Islamic art to wider audiences.

The partnership will begin with a loan agreement allowing select artefacts from MIA's renowned collection to be displayed at our Western Sydney gallery. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to experience pieces that have never before left the Middle East, spanning ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and manuscripts from across the Islamic world.

Beyond exhibitions, this collaboration opens doors for knowledge exchange. Curators and conservators from both museums will participate in residency programmes, sharing best practices in preservation, display, and public engagement. MIAA staff will travel to Doha for specialised training, while MIA colleagues will visit Sydney to learn about our community-focused approach to museum programming.

Education sits at the heart of this partnership. Together, we are developing resources for Australian schools that explore Islamic art, history, and culture in accessible and engaging ways. These materials will be freely available to educators across NSW and beyond.

We extend our gratitude to the NSW Government West Invest program, whose ongoing support of MIAA made this international collaboration possible. We also thank ISRA for their vision in establishing a cultural institution that can stand alongside the world's finest.

This partnership reflects our belief that art transcends borders. By connecting Western Sydney with Doha, we are building bridges of understanding and celebrating our shared human creativity.

More details on upcoming loan exhibitions will be announced in the coming months. We cannot wait to share this journey with our community.
