New Exhibition: Treasures from the Islamic Golden Age

MIAA announces Luminaries of the Golden Age, a new exhibition featuring over sixty rare artefacts from the Islamic Golden Age, opening 15 March 2026.

The Museum of Islamic Art Australia is proud to announce our upcoming exhibition, Luminaries of the Golden Age, opening this March in our main gallery.

This landmark exhibition brings together over sixty rare artefacts from the Islamic Golden Age, a period spanning roughly the 8th to 14th centuries when scholars, scientists, and artists across the Islamic world made extraordinary contributions to human knowledge.

Visitors will encounter astrolabes crafted by medieval astronomers, medical instruments that shaped early surgical practice, and illuminated manuscripts preserving the works of philosophers like Ibn Sina and Al-Farabi. Many of these pieces are on loan from private collections and international institutions, making their Australian debut at MIAA.

The exhibition explores how cities like Baghdad, Cordoba, and Cairo became thriving centres of learning, where ideas flowed freely across cultures and disciplines. Through carefully curated displays, we trace the journey of knowledge from ancient Greek texts translated into Arabic, through centuries of Islamic scholarship, and into the European Renaissance.

We have designed the experience to be engaging for all ages. Interactive stations allow younger visitors to experiment with the principles behind historic inventions, while detailed commentaries offer deeper context for those wanting to explore further.

Luminaries of the Golden Age runs from 15 March to 30 August 2026. Tickets are available now through our website, with free entry for children under twelve and concession pricing for students and seniors.

We invite the Western Sydney community and beyond to join us in celebrating this remarkable chapter of shared human heritage.
